The Battle of Saratoga was a major turning point in this war we are facing. The British general John Burgoyne, captured Fort Ticonderoga easily, but then his problems began. Burgoyne camped near Saratoga, New York, with American commander Horatio Gates only four miles away armed with 12,000 men. General Gates positioned his men in such a way as to block the British from escaping, but he prepared to add fortifications to Bemis heights. This strategic fortification prevented General Burgoyne from retreating down the St. Lawrence river. But because General Burgoyne didn’t know how many men were with the General Gates, he attempted to break through the lines. This began the Battle of Freeman’s Farm, or as others call it, The First battle of Saratoga.
