Assess inmates entering prison for both mental health needs and suitability for prison programs. When working in a prison, the need for assessments for inmates entering and returning to the public is considered an important part of the decisions that are made for the initial placement of the individual that is brought into these institutions to ensure that presenting symptoms of mental illness is identified. Many prison programs are based on the emphasis for treatments that can assist for the inmates identified with serious or acute mental illness, those who as suicidal, and those with dangerous or disruptive symptoms (n/a, 2004). Psychologists in law enforcement are involved in four areas: assessment (fitness-for-duty evaluations, special unit evaluations), clinical intervention, operational support (hostage negotiation, criminal activity analyses), organization consultation (excessive force concerns, police corruption problems, workplace stressors) (Bartol, 2014).
