The president and vice president are the only political offices that are not elected by a direct vote from the people. Instead, the United States relies on the votes of the electoral college to elect them every four years. Although it was a reasonable idea in its time the electoral college is outdated and should be replaced by a direct popular vote. The electoral college negatively affects presidential elections because the system creates the possibility for the loser of the popular vote to win the election, distorts presidential campaigns, and skews the one person one vote principle of democracy. With the current system in place it is more than possible for a candidate to lose the popular vote and still win the presidential election. This
