The middle ages was a dark place but there was good that came out of it. I believe that the middle ages had more hope than despair. While there were quite a lot of struggles in the middle ages most people tended to hang on. People kept their faith in god, towns grew larger, and pretty much everything advanced in some way. The population of Europe grew along with these advances and people began to gain more rights.
Most people were strongly religious and had faith in God and life after death. They built beautiful cathedrals and churches as a sign of their faith in God. When you visit a medieval church or cathedral you do not get a feeling of despair. Sure bad things happen but they still do and sometimes there is just nothing you can do to change
