The World In Ayn Rand's Anthem

Life is may seem easy when you think about a world with everyone created equally and everyone being the exact same, but in reality, this isn’t the case. The main character of the book Anthem, Equality 7-2521, is living in this type of world, and he does not enjoy it at all. The author creates the way the world is by portraying a futuristic time where freedom and the personal rights of mankind have been taken away from through past wars and violent times. The author also explains a world where there is no electric lighting, and no modern technology in use, considering that it is a future world, which makes the reader wonder what may have caused the world to become so backwards. He says this because it is wrong, according to the society he lives in, to think thoughts that no one else thinks of, and put them down on paper, for no one else to see. Any of the things that he records were all against the rules of the society he lives in, including him stealing the paper that he used to write his private thoughts down on, but by writing, he finds a small form of freedom, in the so called perfect world he lives in (Rand 18). The world in which Equality 7-2521 lives in requires all men and women to think alike and be alike, and follow a strict set of orders. Each person is given a job that is assigned by the Council of Vocations, and this job and the rules that come with it must be adhered to strictly (Rand 26). Equality 7-2521 receives the job of a street sweeper, and he pretends to be happy with it, but in reality, he does not enjoy it.
