Ayn Rand, author of Anthem, experienced a horrible childhood during Russia’s difficult times, which scarred her and impacted her to include her personal experience in her writing. Rand’s purpose of this action is to demonstrate the feelings of Equality 7-2521, as it is very similar to her own feelings during her time in Russia. In Anthem, Rand includes an allusion by showing the feelings of Equality 7-2521 as he watches the Transgressor that spoke the Unspeakable Word being burned alive. “And it was a sight which has stayed with us through the years, and it haunts us, and follows us, and it gives us no rest. According to “World War I: The Russia Revolution”, Russia was experiencing difficult living conditions from 1915 to 1917. There was a disease that killed many Russian and peasants with a poor diet lived with animals. Many refugees experienced hunger and the economy was also terrible due to the war. The citizens wanted to overthrow the government due to their frustration. Ayn Rand was born in St. Petersberg, Russia in 1905, which makes her ten years old when the horrendous living conditions occurred. In her allusion, she stated “We were a child then, ten years old” (Rand 50). It can be inferred that Rand wanted to include her experience to her writing to emphasize her feelings of fear and terror that occurred to her in Russia as a young child into Equality
