In the “Gettysburg Address” held at Cemetery Hill on 19 November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered this “dedication,” or eulogy, for 51,000 soldiers who fought and lost their lives in the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle lasted for three days and took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania during America’s Civil War. Throughout the Battle of Gettysburg, in total, close to 165,000 soldiers fought for both the Union and Confederacy.

First, the Gettysburg Address’ primary goal was to memorialize the soldiers who gave their lives fighting for their country. President Lincoln achieved his goal through an eloquently spoken, almost scriptural, sounding speech. Lincoln also brought to attention that there is still a “great task” ahead as the war was still ongoing. He stated that "increased devotion" should be placed on the "task" and through that they “shall not have died in vain.”

Furthermore, in holding the speech, or ceremony, at the battlefield where the soldiers fought and perished had a significant positive impact, as this was truly their “final resting-place.”

On the downside, to improve upon or correct the speech, President Lincoln could have directly addressed the Union and Confederate sides and called to the point that an agreement must be met to avoid more loss and bloodshed. Finally, the Gettysburg address still has relevance today; it symbolizes much of what most, if not all, Americans hold dear, it is also a reminder of what could happen if the USA cannot stand
