The original foundation for running the country was the Articles of Confederation. It created a government that was too weak.The Constitution moved a little to the left. It created a Democratic Republic. Since it gave government more power, the Bill of Rights were written to check that power and insure the concept of limited government.The Founders also furthered defined the type of rights the citizens of the US had. They chose natural rights. These are rights that are given by "The Creator". Because of that, they cannot be taken away by government. These are rights you are exercise on your own. They don't require a governmental enabler.
