There were three days of fighting in the Battle of Gettysburg. The first day was a unorganized battle because both sides had troops running into the battle not knowing what to do. Union troops were pushed back to a series of hills called Cemetery Ridge. The Confederate troops got on a Hill called Seminary Ridge. There was a really big field in between both hills. General Lee decided to attack on the second day against the advice of his second in command, James Longstreet. On the second day, the Confederates attacked the Union on both the left and right sides.
