Throughout my research I found that many couples had negative experiences with the health care system and with health care providers. Transgender people have higher rates of mental and physical health problems compared with the heterosexual population; however, their very existence and well as their health care needs receive little to no attention or action at individual, organization, or systematic levels (Hatzenbuehler, O’Cleirigh, Grasso, Mayer, Safren, & Bradford, 2012). Transgender people and their spouses are twice as likely to not have a family doctor and are significantly less likely to seek out health care because of fear of ill-treatment (Hatzenbuehler et al., 2012).
