Ulysses S. Grant was a couragous war general and respected president, therefore that maked him a well rounded leader. He fought in many battles of the civil war and was elected to be president for two terms. Those factors come to support that claim that he was a well rounded leader. Slowly, Grant showed his qualites of an amazing commander for the military. He fought hard, was quick to think , and came up with stratagies ( World Book G 304). In of February 1862, while serving under General Halleck, Grant pursaided Henry to attack the confedreates at Fort Henry (McCarthy 11). Many rebels withdrew the battle, when the Union army approached them (World Book G 304). With the help of a group of gunboats, and seventeen thousand men; Grant to obtained the fort ( McCarthy 11). On his own inative, Grant surrounded the nearby Fort Donelson (World Book G 304). When General Simon Bolivar Buckner asked grant if they could surrender, Grant replied with this: "No terms execpt an uncondtional and immediate surrender can be accepted." The confederate commander, Buckner, came to realize Grant was not messing around, and that he would have to accept Grant's demand. Buckner said his demand was "Ungenerous and Unchivalrous." For months Grant shot at the city, forcing residents into sellars and caves. Finally it came crumbling down on July 4th. Troops under Grant made the confederate surrender Vicksburg, a key point on the Mississippi (O'Connell 34). The capture of a Confederate stronghold at Vicksburg, silenced cristism to his name for a little while (Simon 195). Grant capturing Vicksburg had several vital consequences. It eliminated the entire Confederate army and opened up the whole mississippi, would to the unions control. Grants success was rewarded with a promotion to major general of the regular army.
