To some, this quote may be a vague outline of a phrase that is supposed to be inspirational. However, I see this quote as a foundation to expand the thoughts of many who may be facing extreme hardships or tests of faith. The book Unbroken follows the story of an Olympian, Louis Zamperini, who survived a plane crash, starvation at sea, and years of captivity and torture by the Japanese during World War Two. Louis was determined to keep fighting for what he believed in. Louis didn’t give up, and I won’t either.

I was born to run. Just like a gazelle in the African wilderness, running from the trouble that awaits me when I stop. For me, my trouble was to avoid being normal. Students in my school always looked up to trends that existed in larger schools, and never wanted to create their own. For them, normal is acceptable, and being a follower is a part of life. When I was a freshman, I took note of these recurrent similarities amongst classmates’ actions and motives. This is why I started running: to be different. Leadership traits do not develop within the hearts of similar people, but instead kindle within the minds of the bold, the unlike.
