Team 39’s goal was to develop a computational model that accurately and holistically assessed the effects that all factors have on the possible transportation of an iceberg from Antarctica to Cape Town in order to provide fresh drinking water. The aim was to maximize output and minimize the cost per 1,000 liters.
The computer model takes in three different inputs. First, a choice between three boats, one large, one medium, and one small. Second, the dimensions of the iceberg to be towed. Finally, a choice of a blocky or pyramidal shaped iceberg. Using the first input, the model will compute the bollard pull in newtons and speed of the boat. Using the second input, the model will calculate the force needed to tow an iceberg of those dimensions.
