Now a days people are smarter than you think, with the increase in technology, no one can be taken for granted anymore. In the past few decades “violent-loving culture” has grown and the availability of this culture to children is growing stronger (Jenkins, 5). Kids of all ages can scroll through hundreds of channels and end up in horror film channels that idolize serial murderers or happen across a news network that is discussing gang shootings and violent crimes. Juveniles today have grown up with the wide accessibility to media of all kinds and have that as a basis for what “real life” is like, instead of actually being able to see that most of what is portrayed is wrong. Modern children understand how violence works and are aware of how to use weapons or what they’re used for. These influences are decreasing children's sensitivity to violence and increasing the number of crimes committed by juveniles. …show more content…
Many of the light sentences given by judges do not teach kids anything except for their criminal actions just get them a “slap on the wrist.” Juvenile courts are designed to offer “treatment and guidance” for juveniles who commit crime and deter them of committing more (SRO Munyard). Putting these children and teens in the juvenile court system leads to a shorter sentence resulting in them getting out of jail earlier. Because the courts and juvenile rights advocates believe that second chances should be given to youths who commit crimes, criminals are walking the streets, living as our neighbors, and in many instances committing additional crimes. Juveniles should be held more accountable for their actions and tried as
