On March 4, 1801 Thomas Jefferson became president of the United States, which at the time was only a little more than a dozen colonies along the Middle East coast of North America. His presidency lasted 8 years, or two terms, with the first being much more successful than the second. In his first two years in office, Jefferson was able to lower the national debt from $80 million to $57 million; he reduced the size of the armed forces and eliminated the tax on whiskey.
