While reading, The War of The Worlds, by H.G. Wells the topic of evolution is an obvious theme. During the Victorian time, when this story was written, there was a tremendous amount of evolution and change occurring in London. This book is about more than the evolution of the physical body, but also the evolution of industry and technology. The Narrator describes the physical difference between the Martian invaders and man-kind, but also the technological evolution that has occurred. The changing industrialization and the shift of people moving from country to city living is a large part of this story. In this story, the Martians are advancing towards London the largest city in the country, killing everything in their path. The Londoners are in denial at first thinking that the Martians will not be able to make it that far. The text says “there were no signs of any unusual excitement in the streets” (50). It also says, “My brother felt no anxiety about us, as he knew from the description in the papers that the cylinder was a good two miles from my house” (50). The people in the cities felt protected and safe. The evolution from rural to city living was thought to be a good thing until the Martians were able to make it into the city.
