Why Do People Use Artificial Sweeteners?

In our current generation, more and more people are becoming concerned with weight loss and their body image, and therefore replacing natural sugar with artificial sweeteners. Almost everyone has heard of these sugars, even if they don’t use them personally. There’s aspartame, sucralose, neotame, and many others which are used in a great amount of food products, such as sugar- free gum, breath mints, and diet soft drinks. Health care experts say artificially sweetened food, when compared to sugar sweetened food provide not a beneficial alternative, but a “less-damaging” one. Many people “...started checking the labels on other foods and beverages to make sure they were made with something other than sugar.” Because many long term health problems are associated with them, people should limit their daily consumption of artificial sweeteners to prevent major health problems in the future. People who consume too much artificial sugars are at an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that people who have too much artificial sugars (mainly in diet soft drinks) on a daily basis have a greater risk of metabolic syndrome, which includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels.
