According to epa.gov, if you average all the world’s oceans, the absolute sea level has risen .06 incher per year. A major change took place in 1993, where the average sea level began to rise at a rate of .11 to .14 inches per year. According to their data relative sea level along the coastline has risen 8inches from 1960-2015. On NASA’s website they have a satellite feed that tracks the rate of change. According to this, the change is 3.2 millimeters per year, since 1993.

Why does the warming climate result in sea level rise?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), warming of the climate result in the increase in sea level for two reasons. “First, as the oceans warm due to an increasing global temperature, seawater expands—taking up more space in the ocean basin and causing a rise in water level. The second mechanism is the melting of ice over land, which then adds water to the ocean.”

From the perspective of sustainability what should be done in these parklands to mitigate damage associated with rising seas?

However, I would imagine it would be very expensive. Structures on the park lands can be raised higher, such as they are already doing in Miami. “In Miami Beach, streets are being raised 2.5 feet. A new art museum in downtown Miami is designed so flood water can flush through its foundation.” I think it would be in our best interest to gather native animals and plants from these parklands and try to integrate them else where where they will not harm a new
