I believe that the importance of vaccines needs to be emphasized more and made clearer to the general public. Even just getting basic vaccinations plays an important part of health as a whole and is far more valuable and important than most individuals realize. The nearly twenty available vaccines are important in the promotion of personal health, public health, and in the fight against the spread of dangerous communicable diseases.
When you are properly vaccinated, you help your body in the prevention of infection from pathogens by exposing your immune system to a modified form of these disease-causing microorganisms. This provides experience for your immune system in fighting certain strains of pathogens without actually inflicting the illness onto you. Your body can use this experience to recognize the normal forms of these pathogens so it will identify them in the future as bodily invaders and know to attack them to prevent infection. Your overall chance of contracting illnesses of which you are properly immunized against is greatly reduced.
