William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He is considered to be the greatest writer in the English language and his work such as Macbeth, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet are still studied and performed to this day. William was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon Warwickshire, West Midlands England to parents John Shakespeare an alderman and bailiff and Mary Arden. His actual birthdate is unknown, but the date of his baptism which people usually go by is April 26, 1565. William was the 3rth son born out of 8 children but was the oldest surviving son. Anne Hathaway was already three months pregnant when the got married so six months later. gave birth to a daughter named Susanne and then two years later to twins one son named Hamlet and one daughter named Judith, who were named after two wonderful friends of William and Anne, Hamlet Sadler and his wife Judith Sadler, who also became godparents of the twins. Hamlet later died on August 11, 1592, at age eleven of unknown causes. Seven years after the birth of Hamlet and Judith William disappeared scholars refer to this time as his “lost years”. There are a couple of theories of what he could have been doing during this period such as that he might have been working as a schoolmaster in Lancaster, that William went into hiding for poaching a deer and that he went to London and found work as a horse attendant at a theater in London. There is evidence however that by 1592 William was earning a living as an actor and playwright in London. By the time of the early 1590s, William Shakespeare was the managing partner and co-owner of a theater company called the Lord Chamberlains. But because the horse ride from London to Stratford was four days long Shakespeare spent the majority of his time spent in London acting and writing plays and visited his family in Stratford one day a year during the 40 days Lenten period when all of the theater were closed. By 1598, William Shakespeare and his partners were able to build a brand-new theater called the Globe near the south bank of the Thames River. Since the Globe was built before electricity was invented all of the performances were held in the daytime. There were no light, microphones, curtains or and at this period females were not allowed to act, so men played the female parts. Because there were no microphones, the actors on stage had to exaggerate their gestures and overact their lines to make themselves understood. The poorer audience members would pay one penny (one entire day pay) to stand in front of the stage while the richer people who paid more for their seats could sit down. The audience members were far more energetic and rowdy than the audiences today. They would be loud and disruptive, shoving each other to get to their seats and hecklers would sometimes shout at the actors on stage, but Shakespeare always made sure to point those people
