Writing Style In the article “How to Write with Style”, Kurt Vonnegut gives the writers some important suggestions on how to write well with personal style. The purposes of his suggestions are to make the writers find their own personal style and make it better. According to Vonnegut, writers should reveal something about themselves, write about interesting ideas, maintain simplicity, and write clearly. These suggestions have provided me with confidence that I can write with style. Kurt Vonnegut says, “The most damning revelation you can make about yourself is that you do not know what is interesting and what is not.” When I was in high school, my English teacher let us chose our own topic for one essay. I chose basketball for my topic because it was May, the NBA finals. Nevertheless, I was not interested in basketball at all, so it was hard for me to write a good essay about it. I received a bad grade for that assignment because I did not have enough knowledge about basketball. After I read this article, I realized that I should have some ideas before I start writing, and think about something interesting for me. Everyone loves to read something that relates to him or her especially something they care about. A subject that the writers are interest in makes them focus on it carefully and they will have more thoughts about it. “Simplicity of language is not only reputation, but perhaps even sacred.” According to Vonnegut’s idea, simple language makes people understand our ideas. I believe good writing does not need to be filled with complex and fancy sentences. If the writer uses a complicated sentence, the readers will misunderstand and the writer will not make his or her point. Vonnegut advises us to keep it simple. According to Chinese Culture, the writers love to use flowery language in their writing because it sounds deeper and more elegant; in our culture, it called “quality suggestive of poetry or painting”. After I discovered Vonnegut’s suggestions, I understood the meaning of “Less is more”. Sometimes I know what I want to say, but it is really hard to think about any sentences to express it. If it cannot come out with any good sentences, it will make my writing complicated. The most valuable advice to me is to be precise because it will make the writing meaningful and understandable for the readers. Simple language makes readers get what the writers are trying to tell us, so never use flowery language. As the result, writers should write with simplicity, and be specific and go directly to the point. Write clearly so the readers can understand the writer. In
