“The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky”, by Stephen Crane, is a classic tale of good versus evil. There is a hero, Jack Potter, and a villain, Scratchy Wilson. When the plot unfolds, it unfolds like any other western story. An antagonist walks through town shooting and calling for blood, not just anyone's blood, but the blood of the town marshal. There is a clear hero of the story, Jack Potter, but not everything is as it seems. “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky” is set in western Texas, accessible by train. The main character Jack Potter is coming back from San Antonio where he has just been married. As Jack and his bride ride home to Yellow Sky, Jack is thinking not of what his life will be like now that he is married, instead he is worried about what the town will think of him being married. This shows us the Jack is only human. Stephen Crane is portraying someone who is transitioning from a western law man into a married citizen of Yellow Sky. Jack Potter was trying to change his role in the small society of Yellow Sky; he is trying to add some security to being the town marshal. Jack still needed the respect and dedication from the people of Yellow Sky while not being shot by Scratchy. He needed a solution to being the town marshal and keeping his dignity and manhood. Jack came up the perfect plan. He could use his bride to prove his superior status and protect himself from Scratchy. Scratchy knew that if he killed Jack, the town would see that he had died for them. Jack took a massive risk by showing up unarmed at his house, fully knowing that Scratchy would be threatening him again. Jack also knew that it would be ungentlemanly to shoot and unarmed married
