Zora Neale Hurston (born January 7, 1891) was an African American author. She was most popularly known for novels such as “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and shorter ones like “Sweat.” Hurston was the daughter of two former slaves, which inspired much of her work. Hurston modeled a high work ethic from a young age. She worked multiple jobs as a way to support herself. Later in life she was recognized as a sensational folklorist and anthropologist whose outstanding accomplishments recorded cultural history.

Her accomplishments include becoming a fixture in the Harlem Renaissance, authoring the masterpiece “Their eyes were watching God” and recording the African American experience. Zora Neale Hurston moved to Harlem in the 1920’s and soon became the heart of the community. Zora’s “sweat” marked the beginning of her establishment as a literary force and moved the community. The short story was about a woman with an unfaithful husband who took her money, which was highly related to African American Women of that time. One of her pieces that touched the brotherhood was her autobiography “How it feels to be colored me”.
