Terrorism is referred to as the practice or impedance of violence in order to achieve a political, religious, or ideological aim (Nagdy). In the Payen article terrorism is classified as a fourth generation warfare and as a violent crime. Today, terrorism is believed to be a great threat to society and in turn is illegal under anti terrorism laws in most jurisdictions. Terrorism is also viewed as a war crime under the laws of war when used to target non-combatants, such as civilians, neutral military personnel, or enemy prisoners of war. Many political organizations have used terrorism to achieve their goals. The symbolism of terrorism can bring about human fear to help achieve their goals (Payne). Terrorism is an unwelcome and harmful matter that needs to be dealt with and overcome. This is a problem because the word alone puts fear into many. Terrorism has been around for a long time and has caused empires either to rise or fall, and let people gain power. Terrorism is a growing problem. Just a simple act …show more content…
According to the Smith article, on September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the United States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists had flown two of the four planes planes into the twin towers also known as the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact that was caused from the crash resulted in the buildings catching fire and collapsing. Another one of the planes destroyed part of the Pentagon which is the U.S. military headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Shanksville, Pennsylvania is where the fourth and final plane had crashed. It is believed that terrorists on that plane were planning to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. However, Passengers that were on that plane fought back against the terrorists and stopped them from hitting their target. In the aftermath, almost 3,000 people lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks
