A Career As An Orthopedic Surgeon

What do I want to be when I grow up is the question I’m always asked. When I grow up I would like to be an orthopedic surgeon. I always dreamed of working in the medical field. Last year I went to a medical camp at VCU medical center and that really struck my interest in the field. I was exposed to many surgical procedures that most people would not normally see.

An Orthopedic Surgeon does many things to benefit humanity. An orthopedic surgeon does multiple things, they help diagnose and treat illnesses and that helps people heal . If we didn’t have a surgeon to do that we’d be in real trouble. Surgeons cut, fuse and reshape the body's tissues to restore the body's proper function. I have always wanted to do that ever since I was a little kid. When I was much younger I would love to play the operation game.

There is so much time devoted to the job. Before surgeons are qualified to operate they have to complete at least four-year bachelor's degree program in biology, pre-medicine, or a related field. Along with that surgeons must complete four additional years of medical school. After you’ve sat have completed at least 8 years in a classroom with some hands on procedures it time to get some experience. Now this is my favorite part. You get to do four to five years of an orthopedic surgery residency in a hospital. When I was 13 years old I went to a medical camp at VCU Medical Center that let me experience what it was like to be a surgeon.
