Independent reading is reading a self selected book silently, to promote the love of reading and to provide the time and opportunity to practice reading independently to improve reading proficiency.
Automaticity is the ability to decode words effortlessly, leaving the reader the ability to understand and gain a deeper understanding of the materials they are reading. Therefore, comprehending the text. Automaticity is achieved through several encounters with the text. Prosody is the ability to read with expression orally and during independent reading. Prosody is considered the bridge between fluency and comprehension. Proficient readers appear to be reading as if they are talking and demonstrate appropriate phrasing of words and tones, hence improving reading proficiency.

Modeling appropriate rate and expression demonstrates that a reader does not read at a faster rate to improve fluency. It is important to stress to students slow down to understand the text. Explain the importance of repeated readings to demonstrate what it sounds like when reading fluently orally or during independent reads.
Assisted reading can include several approaches to reading. For instance, choral reading or paired reading are two examples. These reading approaches can be achieved through reading with a teacher, para, strong peer reader, and parents. Technology is also a powerful tool to incorporate assisted reading, such as reading captions and other audio reading tools.
Practice reading the same text (repeated reading) is highly recommended in improving reading fluency. Reading needs to be practiced like anything else we want to achieve excellence in.
