Soldier’s don't only suffer on the battlefield. War brings on an onset of mental detractors that are apparent no where else. Everyone handles it differently, and for some that means not handling it at all. We can see examples of both the inability and adaptations made to cope in the series Band of Brothers and Peleliu Hills. The shows take place during WWII, focusing on the soldiers struggle to stay human, whether their campaign takes them to the tropical islands of Peleliu or the beaches of France.

His commanding officers screams at him to get up and fight but every fiber in his body knows that if he gets up, he’ll go down again, but this time he won’t get up. Despite his training, the physical turmoil experienced in basic and AIT, nothing could prepare Blithe for the audacity of war. After a portion of the town has been taken, They return back to a base camp to heal. Blithe checks into the doctors claiming he can’t see. This is because he is suffering from combat blindness. Even if he wanted to fight, his brain kicked in and forced his eyes to stop the receival of stimuli. This is the form of dealing with the combat stresses, what he can’t see can’t hurt him. In order to protect his mental sanity, Blithe needed to stop the experience, and because he couldn’t just leave, his brain went with what it was hardwired to do. Blithe is required to move on, as he is recovered just enough to fight. His unit runs into a large group of hidden Germans hidden on the other end of a field while they are in the treeline. They are clearly outnumbered as the germans rain bullets and artillery towards them. The Americans need all the help they can get if they want to hold on till reinforcements can
