Cyber Bullying Everyday kids all around the world are bullied, causing kids emotional and physical pain day by day. And one of the most popular ways to bully someone now is over the internet, social media, or cell phones. It is called cyber bullying. “As the number of households with Internet access approaches saturation and cell phone ownership expands to the 100 million mark, so do the ways kids bully each other. Cyber-bullying in the form of text messages, emails, photos, website postings can go school-wide in minutes and global in days. Slanderous information sent out into cyberspace is difficult, if not impossible, to expunge. Cyber-bullying often takes the form of cyber gossip, where damaging content is based on whim; not facts, and is posted on social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook.” (Ross) says Margaret Ross from the Kamaron Institute. Technology is growing more and more every day and with that comes more social media advancements and more ways kids reputations and life’s can be ruined. Studies indicate that cyber-bullying incidents have quadrupled in five years. “A 2000 survey by the Crimes Against Children Research center at the University of New Hampshire reported 6 % of young people had experienced some form of cyber-bullying. A 2005 study by National Children’s Home Charity revealed that 20% had been cyber-bullying victims. A 2004 survey conducted by i-Safe America of 1556 adolescents found that 42 % had been bullied online.” (ross) that is a dramatic increase in something that kids do not have to deal with and needs to be ended. According to Tim Woda from uknowkids.com some of the affects from cyber bullying include, acute depression, physical pain such as stomach and headache, chronic depression, which could result in suicidal tendencies, post-trauma psychological disorders, it can cause the victim to turn to alcohol or substance abuse, self-destructive behavior. These are only a few of the documented effects from cyber bullying and are definitely issues to be taken care of. Ways to prevent cyber bullying for your children or anyone experiencing
