The purpose of Antonio’s dream in “Bless Me, Ultima”, by Rudolfo Anaya, is that there is redemption or second chances for all people. The reader can identify this purpose by the authors use of repetitive diction associated with fire, imagery of the golden carp, and symbolism. Throughout the dream the author uses the word fire. Fire has a positive connotation of meaning rebirth. We first see this when he describes “the frightful fires of hell”. The purpose of the “fires” in hell is to burn people’s sin away, giving them a second chance. Also Antonio says they “burned our castle on the hill” and his family “perished in the flames”.
