April 15, 2013; 2:49pm EDT. At the finish line of the Boston Marathon, there were no smiles, fatigue, or pride. Instead, there was panic. The first of the bombs exploded at the end of Boylston Street, close to the finish line. The second bomb, which would detonate just 12 seconds later, was placed in front of Forum Restaurant, 600 feet away from the first bomb. Standing in front of the restaurant, was the Richards family. They took no notice to the young man wearing the white baseball cap, that placed a backpack just feet from where they stood. As Americans, we feel it is our duty to help each other in the times of hardship. Whether it is in a community, a state, or an entire country, people in America are always at the ready to be of assistance to others. On 9/11, the world watched silently on the news as not one, but two planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City. To come from this was pain, heartbreak, and fear. Many watched hopelessly as individuals hurled their bodies out of windows on the top floors, to escape a slow and painful death from fire. During the Boston Marathon bombings, hundreds of innocent bystanders and runners had their lives changed in a matter of seconds, losing limbs, shards of debris gauging their faces. Many call us spoiled, to live in a country where freedom and community coincide. It is not the nature of our society that makes us this way entirely however; it is our grasp on human nature. We feel obligated to help those who are less fortunate and those that cannot care for themselves. It is this obligation that keeps our community strong. On 9/11, it was the American spirit that kept firefighters running into buildings, attempting to save people’s lives even if it meant risking their own. Individuals on another plane overtook the hijacker, and caused a crash landing in a field, rather than hitting another building and causing more harm. 9/11 did not change America they way those who preformed it thought it would. …show more content…
However, recent current events such as the “Black Lives Matter” movement have weakened this unity between Americans. The BLM movement has been an uproar since early 2014. The movement came when a black man was fatally shot by a white police officer, and many people of the African American community felt that the shooting was unjust. As more and more of these instances occurred, the matters became more serious. Videos began to surface the web, going viral in an instant. Riots began to form, and continue to form today. The American spirit has been in its descent since 2014, but many believe it is only a matter of time before we see eye to eye and unite once gain as a community. In conclusion, the American spirit does not only shine through in the event of major tragedies, but also in our everyday lives. However, it is best exemplified in these times of despair, when the entire community, sometimes even country, unites to support each other in a time of need. We still have American
