Bronfenbrenner: Teacher’s Relationships with Students

This report will discuss teacher’s relationships with their students. This particular topic is important to me and has played a very substantial part in my family’s life, because my little brother was put under extreme psychological stress in grade one. The teacher’s reaction as well as the school’s reaction to this problem was very unprofessional and appalling. By using Bronfenbrenner’s model I will explain how this issue fits into the different systems and how the issue affected my brother’s learning and frame of mind throughout the year. Positive and supportive relationships between teachers and students is believed to foster student’s engagement in learning activities and development through their own academic achievement. (Hughes, Luo, Kwok, & Loyd, as cited in (Spilt, Hughes, Wu & Kwok, 2012). The idea that learning is something controlled by the student’s social surroundings is the central point for many theories on teacher student relationships. The extended attachment perspective proposes that if a student has a poor relationship with their teachers it can lead to students having feelings of distress and insecurity. Which is then believed to limit children’s ability to dedicate energy to social and academic activities. (Pianta, as cited in, (Spilt, Hughes, Wu & Kwok, 2012). With this being said it becomes clear an excellent technique to ensure that teacher student relationships remain healthy and positive is to have a direct relationship with the child/children and always remain sensitive to his/her intellectual and emotional needs. It is evident that academic success is dependent on this example of a healthy and happy relationship between teachers and their students. For example Nathan is now in grade 2 and has a caring compassionate teacher who assists him with his anxiety issues as well as helping him to adjust with changes in the school or classroom
