Thesis 1: Shepard uses symbolism in order to explain the secret of the dysfunctional family in “Buried Child”.
Topic sentence: Shepard uses rain which symbolizes the baby murdered by drowning in the water by Dodge.
Evidence:
1) When Halie said to Dodge in the beginning that whenever there is rain he get sick – “You know what it is, don’t you? It’s the rain! Weather... No sooner the does the rain start than you start.” Where Dodge replies “Catastrophic” adding “It looks like rain to me! Plain old rain!” (pg. 8) which shows the connection to his past when he drowned and buried the child.
2) (pg 20) When Tilden came in with corn in his hand and that he picked it from his backyard, Dodge asked him to put it back from where it got it, Tilden

1) Tilden starts bring corns and carrots in the house from the back yard, which Dodge is not ready to believe because he had not grown anything in their backyard since 1935 (pg.20) which symbolizes that things from the past were coming back all the crops and later Vince came back home.
2) (pg.89) When Shelly goes up to Halie’s room at night and saw the photos hanging in her room she said to Dodge “Your whole life’s up there…Theirs is a picture of a farm. A big farm. A bull. Wheat. Corn. … All kids are standing out in the corn. They’re all waving these big straw hats. One of them doesn’t have a hat… There’s a baby. A baby in a woman’s arms.” Which portrays the dead baby and the connection with the farm.
Topic sentence: There are many backstage events happened with the characters which play a major role in the play.
1) There are many backstage events in this play which are not mentioned in the play. For example – the reason of Tilden leaving New Mexico and coming back to home, the reason of Vince leaving the home and suddenly returning to meet his father and his family, Ansel’s death, Bradley’s leg cut off, the drowning and burying of the child and Halie’s affair with Father Dewis. These examples symbolizes how dysfunctional Dodge’s family
