There is a revolutionary book called To Kill a Mockingbird By: Harper Lee. This book covers a small town involved in a racial court case. This case would decide how everyday life goes on in this small town. The Finch family are the main characters in this story including Calpurnia an old black woman, the family's house maid. This individual impacted the novel in many ways. Some examples of this would be her ties to the Finch family, taking them to a black church, and by showing that blacks and whites could live together.
When Mrs. Finch died, Calpurnia was assigned to be the family's housekeeper. Cal was supposed to fill the hole in the Finch family. Atticus and Calpurnia had known each other for some time. Calpurnia lived in Finch’s Landing as a kid “Grew up down there between the Buford place and the Landin’ “(pg.166). Calpurnia is a few years older than Atticus too .She is one of only four people in her church able to read “Can’t but about four folks in First Purchase read… Im one of them”(pg.165).
