Character Analysis: All Quiet On The Western Front

The horrors of war create an environment void of hope and will to fight. Erique Remarque describes this environment through his novel, All Quiet On The Western Front. However, amidst the struggle of war, the characters, Paul and his comrades, find that their purpose to fight is not for their country, but for each other, creating a strong sense of camaraderie. This camaraderie creates a bond between the soldiers, since they all face the hardships of war together, share a sense of security, and have a cause to fight for. Camaraderie is what ultimately gives the soldiers a will to continue on in war, and when that cause to fight is taken from them, they lose the drive to keep fighting. A strong sense of camaraderie creates a feeling of security amongst the soldiers, since they know someone is protecting and watching out for them as they do the same. The feeling of security motivates them to keep fighting since they feel less dangered and alone. When Albert is to be put off the train at a hospital, Paul insists to go with him. The soldiers find that all the horrors of war they must face together. The understanding that one does not have to face the unthinkable alone comforts them and gives them reason to proceed. Paul writes, “First we are soldiers and afterwards, in a strange and shamefaced fashion, Individual men as well… It is a great brotherhood...”(272), demonstrating the unity that war creates between the men. Paul states that even though it is a terrible ordeal, “ It is a great brotherhood.” It is important that the soldiers can find brotherhood amidst war since the brotherhood is what gives them the passion to fight on.
