Communism and its effect on America in the 1950s was a way of organizing a society in which the government owns the things that are used to make and transport. People were worried that it was going to come to the United States and take over them. A quote to support that communism was going to take over is, “As the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States intensified. Americans were worried about communism in the United States. It became known as the Red Scare” (History.com). The people and the United States were worried that communism was going to take over. When this happened the United States engaged in the war. A quote from the Cold War Museum is “The effects of McCarthy era symbolized the pure terror of communism during the time due to the Cold War. Although it came to an end in a few short years” (The Cold War Museum). Joseph McCarthy was a U.S. Senator believed that communists was going to take over. So he decide to do an investigation for two years to catch people that were guilty of communism. He was separate from the HUAC. A quote to prove this is, “ People that were on his list were in fact not all communists; most people on the list were alcoholics. McCarthy wanted to investigate it. He continued to investigate for over two years, questioning government departments” (The Cold War Museum). During his investigation a new idea came around which was called McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the campaign he ran go get communism out of the United States during the Cold War. Many people that were on the list were blacklisted or lost their jobs if they were on his list of convicts.
