Giving back to the community is very important because it takes a village to raise a child. A community lasts longer when everyone is partaking a helping hand and supporting each other, versus standing divided. In my life, I did not have a father figure however, I had men who came into my life to be my role model. Men such as Mr. Alston or Lyons who are my neighbors, and also Mr. Nelson, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Philips who are members at my church. These men are the village that helped raised me become the man I am today and I am greatly appreciative of them. In addition to the countless other people who helped developed the person I am today, however, there are others in my city who do not have a support system that I do. Although I am a volunteer firefighter for South Plainfield, New Jersey, I still live in Plainfield and see problems that need solutions. I am part of a ministry at my church, Shiloh Baptists Church, called the College ministry and the goal is to help those in college support each other and community involvement. I am now in the process of reaching out to my former high school, Plainfield High School, and speaking with students particularly seniors and juniors to help them with the college process and life after high school. Should this visit prove to be successful, I would like to create a mentorship program where college students help those in high schools, particularly lower income/minority majority student body, and become not just a someone helping the college process, but a figure that they can look up to. Especially young African American males, where there was not a father figure and though I congratulate the women for taking the role, there are some things only a man can
