Día de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead, is a holiday celebrated in many Latin American countries but it’s mostly celebrated in central and southern Mexico. It is a celebration of family members that have passed on. Most people mistake this holiday for Halloween as it starts on October thirty first and because of the many people dressed up in skeleton costumes, but that is simply not the case. Day of the Dead is actually more closely related the the American holiday Memorial Day than Halloween, as both of these holidays are times for family to honor their loved ones that have passed on, but Day of the Dead focusses on the positive effects of death rather than the negative. They believe that their family members have moved on to a better place, and are happier where they are now. While most Americans believe that their family members are in a better place too, they like to mourn the losses rather than celebrate. People who celebrate Day of Dead think their deceased family members wouldn't want them to be sad, so rather than mourn and cry about their lost life, they remember them in happiness by throwing parades, having fiestas, and gathering together at gravesites to decorate. …show more content…
