Democracy vs Dictatorship

"He's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat. He isn't a perfect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing." In The Lord of the Flies, a group of boys are stranded on a deserted island. One of the boys, called Jack Merridew, is rude and forceful. He uses his strength to lead his choir group to force them into wearing their black robes and hunting pigs. However, he was not voted chief of the island. He becomes the leader of the hunters and provides meat for the society. He eventually uses this, and the fear of "the beast", to win the support of the boys and becomes chief. Jack's role is the society they have created, however negative to their well being, is the most important.

Jack's personality is what makes him a strong leader and therefore important to the society. When he puts on his hunting mask, he leads with brutality and savagery. With his hunting group, he does savage dances and kills pigs. From the beginning, he has had full control of the choir group, and full control of the meat. He uses this to draw the attention of the other boys. After he becomes chief, he can get the boys to tie up Sam and Eric for no reason. These qualities and his power makes him …show more content…
Ralph means well in his intentions, but fails to make a noticeable impact on the lives of the boys. While Ralph is calling meetings where nothing is accomplished, Jack is hunting and providing meat. The meat is something the boys can actually hold in their hands and taste, but a democratic society is only an idea in their minds. While Ralph is trying to calm the boys and tell them the beast is not real, Jack unites the group against the beast, and claims he will hunt and kill it. Even if Jack doesn’t believe the beast exists, he can use it as leverage to gain the upper hand. Jacks actions are what sets him apart from Ralph and makes him important to the
