Are You Distracted by Technology?
Do smartphones, apps, televisions, texting etc. distract you from everyday life? Do they get in the way of your learning, driving and social skills? Technology is getting better and better every day, which makes it easier for us to get distracted while doing a simple task. Some people argue that technology is not distracting but most people will argue that technology is distracting to them. We use technology everyday: whether it is at school, home, work, or driving. Technology is a huge part of our lives and without it most people would be lost. Technology is at the point where it is hard to be without it. Many accidents are blamed on distracted driving and most of the distractions are caused by cell phone usage. Checking messages, emails and social media is a top priority for many people and they will do it on the road while driving. No matter what age the driver is, no one should be texting while driving. While driving, adults and teenagers cannot resist the urge to pick up their cell phone and send a text or respond to one. Car crashes are four times more common to take place while the driver is on their mobile device over any other causes. According to Bret Schulte, talking on a cell phone is not as dangerous as texting these days. (Schulte) But when driving, neither should be a top priority because if you take your eyes off the road for a split second anything can happen. It’s hard for all drivers, especially teenagers, to put down the cell phone and put their hands on the wheel, which results in many car crashes. A Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study of commercial drivers revealed that texting while driving was the riskiest type of driver distraction, making drivers 23 times more likely of getting into a “safety-critical event.” (Virginia Tech Transportation Institute 2009). I even got distracted writing this paper. I would constantly look at my phone every once in awhile at the messages I had received, the snapchats I was getting, and even checked social media apps to keep up to date with my friends. I see distraction of technology everyday, whether it is going to class, driving down the road or eating at a restaurant. Every day in class I see at least two to three people constantly on their phones texting or on facebook or twitter instead of listening to the teacher lecture. It is not only a distraction to them, but it is a distraction to me and to the teacher. When I see someone on their phone I always look over and see what they are doing and I take my mind off of class. Usually when I see someone on their phone, it triggers my mind to get on mine and so I do.
Technology and driving is probably the most distracting thing I notice the most. Whenever I pass people going down the road, half the time I see them looking down and not at the road. Most accidents occur from distracted driving, which results in the use of cell phones. I will admit I will been a victim of texting and driving, and I think a lot people have but it is not safe to do. Taking your eyes off the road for a second can cause the life of yourself or
