Critical Analysis Do The Right Thing
In the film Do The Right Thing by Spike Lee there was plenty of things said about acts of racism that are still going on in today’s world that we live in. After watching the film I understood that Spike Lee wanted the film Do The Right Thing have a extremely deep message. In the film there are various elements that I noticed conveyed this message extremely powerful some examples would be the cinematography and cultural implications.
The cinematography in Do The Right Thing is very unique for example, The camera shot used in the film include dolly shots, tight close up’s, low angle and high angle shots and parallelism. These techniques leave you in the perception as someone looking into a diverse neighborhood

As the day goes on the colors tend to become more yellow until where orange and yellow mix signifying sunset. Inside of buildings in the movie the colors transition cooler but can be orange at time due to light entering through the windows in the buildings. In many of the scenes where characters are speaking to each other inside of buildings there is side lighting wherever windows are placed in the scene. A more significant lighting scene is when Coconut Sid and the other men sit outside in front of a red wall with nearly high key lighting, except for the sun right above them providing a shadow underneath the umbrella. The red wall is also extremely bright adding a source of backlight behind them creating a natural source of light. Once the sunsets in the movie the lighting loses its orange and yellow color becoming neutral depending on studio lights and street lights on the road.
Camera movements in the movie are what make the film different from others by utilizing handheld point of view movements, fast zooms on characters faces to long shots of the neighborhood and the people in it. Many of the shots of Mookie are follow shots showing where he is walking to who he is talking to. Other camera movements near the end of the film become extremely quick and vivid showing the violence and actions of anger characters. Spike Lee makes it natural by being eye level with the angry crowd as they walk towards Sonny’s store showing it as if you were
