School Should Start at 10:15 AM Everyday

Walking around drowsy is not the ideal way to start the school day especially since you have to go to school at such an early time. School should start at 10:15 AM rather than 8:40 AM. This alteration would be enhance one’s ability to perform better at school by reducing the amount of stress In addition, have a later start will improve the health of the students and attendants.

A later start will give students additional time to sleep and to make any additional preparations before going to school. Lack of sleep will drastically reduce your level of concentration which will negatively impact your performance at school resulting in lower grades which will induce further stress and lack of concentration.

Additionally, sleep has a critical function in learning and understanding. A simple solution to this issue would be to postpone the time by which students must attend school without being considered late to a later time. This will give students who wake up early extra time for them to prepare for school and provides students more opportunities to sleep. Regardless, this would be beneficial to all students should such a change occur. According to a report released by Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute, who has a start time at 10:00 AM each day, “students showed a four to nine per cent improvement in academic credit accumulation for grades 9 and 10 following the later start to the school day”. In addition, their performance in English, science, and math has significantly improved. Furthermore, these improvements were greater than any other school within the Toronto District School Board. I agree with this because I have experiences similar to that of this study. I was able to experience this since my school has two late starts every month that start at 10:15 AM. It is inevitable that a student or teacher will encounter a moment where they must spend hours working on a task that must be completed the day after. This would result in a depletion of their energy to work effectively and efficiently the next day. The health and mindset of a teacher play a critical role in thinking and understanding of the student. If the teacher is unable to educate properly, students will not have the knowledge required to do well in evaluations like exams or tests. This would be detrimental to both students and teachers because one’s mental health has a crucial part in their ability to learn and teach respectively. For example, when teachers are unable to go to school to teach due to an illness and require a substitute teacher, the substitute teacher will usually assign work and act as a supervisor to ensure that nothing wrong happens.
