Montag’s Society Why is education important? It is important because knowledge can get you far in lif. For example it can get you into the college you want to go to. It is also important because without knowledge we wouldn’t have the things we have today, like cars, phones, etc. In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Montag, main character, is being hunted down due to his curiosity and bravery trying to find out why books are important. Knowledge in Montag’s world isn’t found in books, so the books are being burned. When he was a child his cousin bullied him by tricking him into keeping sand in a sieve for a dime. “ Once as a child he had sat upon a yellow dune by the sea in the middle of the blue and hot summer day, trying to fill a sieve with sand’ “Fill this sieve with sand and you’ll get a dime” (Bradbury 74) This is saying that Monatg’s mind is being compared to the sieve and the sand because he is trying to memorize a book but can’t remember no matter how hard he tried. Montag easily forgets thing and is trying to memorize a book, so without knowledge your society can or will die. They can take your books away but not the knowledge in your head. His mind is the sand and sieve no matter how hard he tired to memorize the book, he still forgot every word.
