Fair In The Classroom Research

I have been thinking about what does fair mean when it comes to disabilities. A few things have triggered it and really made me stop and question my beliefs and opinions. In the way we access help for those with disabilities, the way we treat those with disabilities, how help for disabilities is funded and whether we should make things fair for those without disabilities. One challenge when teaching in Special Education classroom is other students, teachers, and even parents not understanding the alterations that have to be made. We’ve all heard children in the classroom, and at home, utter phrases such as “why does Eva get to do that and I don’t?” “Why does Sam get more time on the test than me?” The first step is to inform them that everything in life is most certainly not “fair.” But wait a minute, what exactly is “fair?”

In my essay, I would love to examine and defines exactly what I think “fair” is. I think that fair is “giving each of the students what they need to be successful” and “not providing the same thing to each student.” Helping students to understand that fair is not the same thing for everyone is the key in their understanding of why their peers get treated differently. The notion that “fairness means that everyone gets the same” needs to be reexamined.

By listening, sharing, and reflecting, the teacher is able to relate with a student at a more personal level. Although some limit-setting is always in place, there is more tolerance as the teacher allows for student expression and refrains from judging and criticizing. This approach opens opportunities for a student to express feelings without being threatened by the imposition of moral judgments. When a student is able to express perceptions and feelings, then the teacher is able to assist him/her with labeling feelings and behavior, and identifying underlying problem
