To counter and potentially lower the crime rate in the United States, President Obama announced a proposal, that would ultimately make purchasing a firearm more strict, along with providing more knowledge on current laws regarding firearms. Although this executive order calls for higher measures to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals, it is possible that this will restrict law abiding citizens from obtaining these firearms as well. Despite the fact that you can increase the retributions, it is highly unlikely that you can keep a criminal from gaining access to firearms. Implementing strict laws in regard to firearms could help, but could also have its drawbacks, like mental health checks and smart gun technology. Most of the ideas in this proposal has also been in effect for quite sometime now like background checks, a license to sell firearms, active shooter training, and gun safety technology. Such valid points include, firearms “requiring a scan of the owner's fingerprint before a gun can fire” and from preventing individuals with high risk mental dysfunctions from legally owning a firearm (Barack Obama). It is wise to have such technology on a firearm in which it could only fire with the identification of the owner who it’s registered to, as it can prevent plenty of accidental discharges and unlawful usage. Furthermore, impeding a person with a mental dysfunction or disorder from obtaining a firearm is rational as it could stop someone who is emotionally and/or mentally unstable. This could also stop someone who is incompetent from the usage of this tool from purchasing
