When one thinks of Elvis, they think of his distinctive sound, his outlandish outfit and his tendency to attract woman. However these are just things about him. He left a great cultural impact on western society and the US in particular. The main contributions were the spread of rock and roll, desegregating popular music and positively impacting fans in such a way that people still love him. Before Elvis rock music was performed and written by black artists and thus it was only topping the black charts and not the white charts. There were a few white singers that would sing rock songs but they were never as good as the original black versions. Before Elvis really got started, popular music was racially divided. The black singers would have their music labeled as rhythm and blues, while even the covers of these songs by white singers would be labeled as popular music. Elvis helped to destroy this divide with his music. Lastly, Elvis was simply an influential guy and impacted a lot of his fans. Some female fans saw him as the type of man they wanted to date. Some male fans saw him as someone to imidate. However many diehard fans saw Elvis as their friend. He had such an impact on some of these fans that they would give up their lives if Elvis could live again.
