Religion has greatly affected American culture it can be seen in the TV show The Simpsons how this is the case. The television program The Simpsons parodies the average life of Americans and therefore can be used as a way to understand how religion has shaped the culture in America. Christianity is the most popular religion in the United States and this is reflected in the television program. Many of the episodes highlight the idiosyncrasies that religion has had on the American culture. Whether it’s the idea of the whole tow attending church on sunday as the Simpson family often does or the idea of praying to God when they need something. Often when a character finds themselves in a bind they pray to God and make promises that they almost always never keep to get their lives back on track. American literature shows how religion has affected the manner in which Americans present themselves to the world and each other, the myths established in American culture, and the American culture itself. The short story The Devil and Daniel Webster by Stephen Vincent Benet, The Film It’s A Wonderful Life by Frank Capra, and the episodes from The Simpsons all are great examples of how literature has been affected by religion and the American culture. The culture in America was established by religion and has only evolved from there. All three forms of literature present its own take on how religion has effected society but all three conclude the same thing that religion is what shapes most of the culture in the American society. While the United States of America is a free country it is still primarily dominated by christianity and that in itself is what effects the American culture the most especially when it comes to American literature because most Americans associate themselves with the Christian
