In the class English composition II, we have been reading “In the Time of the Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez. We as a class have spoken about our personal connections to the book. I have been in the home of the sister (Casa Museo Hermanas Mirabal). I had the opportunity to see how the home of the Mirabal sisters was, it is an amazing and beautiful place, you can see their clothes, and some of their belonging. When I went to the museum I saw a lot of important things, but what call my attention the most was Maria Teresa’s braid, which is a beautiful braid. I have asked myself why they cut Maria Teresa’s hair. Also, I have listening to some of my classmate personal experiences. We have discussed the book and learn about the Mirabal Sisters. When I was in the Dominican Republic I have heard, and I dramatized the scene of the assassination of the Mirabal Sisters when I was in 8th grade, and I knew about them. However, by reading the book I learned a lot of new things that I don’t know, I learned that Dede was living far away from her sisters. She wasn’t involved in the movement that the Mirabal sisters had against Trujillo because her husband didn’t allow her to be part of the movement. Also, I read in the book that Trujillo at the beginning announced we (The Dominican Republic) were going to have a free country, which was a big lie. While Trujillo was the president of the Dominican Republic my country wasn’t a free country people had to do what Trujillo told them to do. Back them Dominican Republic was just like a jail, nobody was free because of Trujillo. He was called the “Jefe”, which means the boss and people were obligated to do what he wanted people to do because if not he killed the people who were against
