Jamestown began farming a new crop known as tobacco. The trade of tobacco allows the colony to prosper and begin trade with Great Britain. Farming tobacco requires long hours and hard labor. Wanting to make as much profit as possible the plantation owners sought out cheap labor by use of indentured servants. Slavery first appears in Virginia in the early 1600s by way of indentured servants. Most indentured servants were brought over from Britain to serve as labors. An indentured servant was required to sign a contract agreeing to work a set number of years in exchange for their travel to America.
