A theme of The Hunter Games is the criticism of the inequality in society; people treat suffering as entertainment and place great value on the importance of appearances.

Growing up in District 12 of Panem, established after the North American governments collapsed, Katniss is a tough, resourceful 16-year-old girl. After her father’s death in a mine explosion years ago, her mother is depressed and Katniss become the breadwinner of the family.

At the reaping ceremony of the Hunger Games, a reminder of the Districts’ defeat decades ago and the idea that only one winner can survive, Katniss’s sister Prim is selected. “ ‘I volunteer!’ I gasp. ‘I volunteer as tribute!’ ” Katniss volunteers to be the tribute to protect Prim. She goes back and injects Peeta with medicine. They stay there for days because of the rain, and the romance escalates. Later, Foxface dies from eating the poisonous berries Peeta collected. Katniss keeps the berries in case to trick the only tribute Cato.

They go back to Cornucopia for water. Cato is running away from mutant wolves that are originally the dead tributes. They climb up to the Cornucopia. Cato attacks Peeta, but is later pushed to the edge. The wolves overpower him and Katniss shoots him to end his suffering. Another announcement is made that now only one winner can survive. Katniss takes out the berries and wants to take them with Peeta. They are stopped and declared winners.

The outcome makes Capitol angry, thinking it as rebellion. Haymitch warns Katniss that it puts her family in danger. “And right now, the most dangerous part of the Hunger Games is about to begin.”. Meanwhile, Peeta loses his leg and now has a prosthetic. He is angry and hurt when Katniss explains the romance strategy. Yet when they return to District 12, they hold hands to greet the people and
