In nursing, there are a variety of specialties, and differences that go along with them, but one similarity that stands firm is that nurses, no matter the patient population, are essential in providing and ensuring the safety and quality of care that is being given. Nurses are a vital component in providing patient safety, because they are the ones who are consistently interacting with patients and implementing the standards and guidelines that are set by national organizations (GOOD and cash). One specific organization is The Joint Commission. Their purpose is to ensure the quality and safety of healthcare on a national level. They are able to achieve this through implementing various initiatives. Nurses carry the responsibility of ensuring these standards are being carried out. The Joint Commission has set out an initiative called The National Patient Safety Goals, that list goals that healthcare organizations should be working towards, and one goal listed is the prevention of infection in a variety of situations.(). It is because urinary catheters are so widely used throughout the healthcare system that catheter associated urinary tract infections are such a prevalent issue that is plaguing our healthcare systems. The Joint Commission has set out a set of guidelines to help the healthcare community prevent this type of infection and it addresses topics such as the proper indication for catheter use, the proper technique for inserting a catheter and the proper maintenance and surveillance of patients with indwelling urinary catheters.
